4 Fun Home Science Experiments You Can Try in Rwanda

Create the volcano shape around the bottle using modeling clay or papier-mch. Once you have your volcano structure ready, mix two tablespoons of baking soda and a few drops of food coloring in the bottle. Finally, pour vinegar into the bottle, and watch as the eruption begins! 2. Rainbow in a Jar: This experiment allows children to explore the concept of density and observe how different liquids stack up. You will need several differently colored liquids, such as water, cooking oil, and syrup, along with a tall glass or jar. Begin by filling the glass with one of the liquids, leaving some room at the top. Slowly pour another liquid of a different color on top of the first one. Repeat this process until you have added all the liquids. With each layer, you will start to see a vibrant rainbow forming in the jar. Encourage your child to observe and discuss why the liquids have different densities. 3. DIY Lava Lamp: Who doesn't love a lava lamp? With a few simple ingredients, you can create a mesmerizing lava lamp at home. Gather a clear glass or plastic bottle, water, vegetable oil, food coloring, and effervescent antacid tablets. Fill the bottle about two-thirds full with vegetable oil. Add water until it almost reaches the top, but leave some space for the bubbles. Add a few drops of food coloring to the mixture. Break the effervescent tablet into smaller pieces and drop them into the bottle. As the tablet reacts with the water, colorful bubbles will rise and fall, creating a magical lava lamp effect. 4. Floating Egg Experiment: Intrigue your child with the phenomenon of a floating egg. Fill a glass or jar with water and place an uncooked egg in it. Observe how the egg sinks to the bottom. Next, gradually add salt to the water and stir until the salt dissolves completely. Continue adding salt and stirring until the egg begins to float. Explain to your child that the increased density of the salty water helps the egg float. This experiment provides an excellent opportunity to discuss concepts of density and buoyancy. These science experiments are not only educational but also an excellent way to bond with your child while having fun. Given their simplicity, you can easily try them at home using everyday materials found in Rwanda.
